Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds
They look identical, they're graded identically, and one costs a fraction of the other. Here's an honest, sales-pitch-free comparison to help you decide which is right for you.
This is the single biggest decision in diamond shopping today, and it's often the most confusing. The short version: a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — not an imitation — that happens to be made in a lab instead of in the earth. Beyond that, the differences come down to price, rarity, resale, and what the origin means to you.
What is a lab-grown diamond?
A lab-grown (or "lab-created," "man-made") diamond is pure crystallized carbon — the exact same material as a mined diamond. It has the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness, and optical properties. It sparkles the same way and tests as a real diamond, because it is one.
They're produced by recreating the heat and pressure of diamond formation, using one of two methods:
- HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) — mimics deep-earth conditions.
- CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) — grows the crystal layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas.
Important distinction: lab-grown diamonds are not the same as diamond simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Simulants merely look like diamonds but are different materials. A lab-grown diamond is genuinely a diamond.
Are they graded differently?
No. Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the exact same 4Cs — cut, color, clarity, and carat — as natural diamonds. A well-cut, G-color, VS1 lab diamond looks like a well-cut, G-color, VS1 natural diamond, because the grading scale is identical. If you're new to the 4Cs, our 4Cs guide covers them.
The main difference is which lab does the grading. Lab-grown stones are most often certified by IGI, while natural stones are most often certified by GIA (which also grades lab-grown). Either way, insist on an independent report — see our guide to reading a certificate.
Price: the headline difference
This is where the two diverge sharply. For a diamond of comparable size and quality, lab-grown typically costs a large fraction less than natural — and lab-grown prices have fallen dramatically over the last few years as production has scaled up. In practice, choosing lab-grown often means you can get a noticeably larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget.
What this means for you: if maximizing size or quality for your budget is the priority, lab-grown stretches your money the furthest. If the diamond's rarity and origin matter more to you, natural may be worth the premium.
Resale and long-term value
Be clear-eyed here: diamonds of either type are generally poor financial investments. That said, natural diamonds tend to retain more resale value than lab-grown, partly because of their finite supply. Lab-grown diamonds currently have very little resale value — as prices keep falling, a used lab stone is worth far less than what was paid.
Our honest take: buy the diamond for the ring and the moment, not as an asset. If resale is genuinely a factor in your decision, that leans natural — but don't expect either to appreciate.
Ethics and the environment
Both sides market themselves as the "responsible" choice, and the truth is more nuanced than either pitch:
- Natural diamonds are mined, which has environmental and, historically, human-rights concerns. The industry uses the Kimberley Process to reduce "conflict diamonds," and many modern mines fund local economies — but sourcing transparency still varies.
- Lab-grown diamonds avoid mining entirely, but growing them is energy-intensive; how "green" they are depends heavily on the electricity source of the specific producer. "Eco-friendly" claims are often overstated.
If ethics or sustainability drive your decision, look for specifics — a natural diamond with documented origin, or a lab producer using renewable energy — rather than trusting a generic label.
Can anyone tell them apart?
Not with the naked eye — even a jeweler generally can't tell a lab-grown from a natural diamond by looking. Distinguishing them requires specialized equipment. Reputable sellers always disclose which is which, and lab-grown stones are frequently laser-inscribed "Lab Grown" on the girdle, with the origin stated on the grading report.
So which should you choose?
